FAA Announces $481 Million in Airport Infrastructure Grants, Including Kentucky Funding

October 2026 | Abbie Jones Consulting, PSC
Airports across the United States are receiving new federal investment to improve infrastructure, support aviation safety, and modernize aging facilities.
On September 3, 2026, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced $481 million in Airport Infrastructure Grants for 191 awards across 36 states and two territories.
The funding includes a significant investment in Kentucky aviation infrastructure.
Kentucky Among the Grant Recipients
The FAA announcement identified a $32.5 million grant for terminal reconstruction at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.
Other major investments include $100 million for improvements at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and $14.2 million for taxiway construction and rehabilitation at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.
These projects highlight the broad range of facilities and improvements that support the nation's aviation system.
Airport Improvements Require More Than Construction
Behind every successful airport infrastructure improvement is a coordinated process involving planning, technical evaluations, design, and construction oversight.
Depending on the nature of the project, engineering and surveying activities may include:
Existing-condition and topographic surveys
Runway and taxiway pavement evaluations
Site grading and drainage improvements
Utility and infrastructure coordination
Construction layout and supporting field surveys
Airports present unique engineering considerations, including operational restrictions, safety requirements, scheduling constraints, and coordination with multiple agencies.
Why Continued Investment Matters
Infrastructure improvements help airport sponsors maintain facilities, address deficiencies, and plan for changing operational needs.
For regional and general aviation airports, careful capital planning is particularly important because available funding and operational resources may be limited.
Federal and state funding opportunities can support infrastructure needs, but moving from an identified need to a completed improvement still requires project-specific planning and technical preparation.
